Grid vs Cloud Comparison - evolution or revolution?
Comparative study on cloud and grid released by the EGEE project. Will the cloud replace, displace or co-exist alongside the grid?
The EGEE project released last week the report "An EGEE Comparative Study: Grids and Clouds - Evolution or Revolution?". The study was performed by Marc-Elian Bégin while working at CERN (he is now at Six²) and reviewed among others by Charles Loomis (Six² and CNRS/LAL). The report was presented publicly for the first time at OGF23 in Barcelona, Spain.
The report compares current production systems, EGEE/gLite for the grid and Amazon AWS (EC2 and S3) for the cloud. Recommendations are proposed for publicly funded projects such as EGEE to bridge the gap between current grid and new development in cloud, especially the technological choices made by Amazon, such as Hardware Virtualisation, REST, Resource Oriented Architecture, HTTP(S) and BitTorrent.
